Bees coach, Doug Sheppard, speaks about good performances last weekend and looks ahead to another weekend of Autumn Cup action

We enjoyed a good weekend, away to Peterborough and at home to Sheffield – better than the Sunday score would suggest.

Bayley Harewood was able to convert three of the many chances the team created Saturday for his first professional hat trick, so our journey home was more enjoyable than last week’s return from Leeds. Our 7–5 win set us up to face Sheffield on Sunday.

Our visitors last Sunday lead the Autumn Cup at present. They play an attacking brand of hockey, so we knew we had to frustrate them defensively while looking to capitalise on turn overs. We went into the third period tied. Trailing by one with a minute and change left on the clock we decided to pull our net-minder. It’s too early in the Cup competition to worry about goals for and against, we also want to create a winning mentality this early in the season. Goals can be quickly scored. As it turned out, they were able to add two empty net goals and ran out 5-2 winners.

This score line does not reflect how close the game was and how well we had played.

We’ve had a good week of training as we continue to improve every day. We’ll be looking for the full four points this weekend.

Let’s hope this coming weekend we have the puck luck.
