RULES OF HOCKEY

GAME TIMES

The game consists of 3 x 20 minute periods. The clock will stop for any stoppages in play.

TEAMS

Each team are only allowed 6 players on the ice at any one time (1 goalie & 5 skaters). The 5 skaters are usually 2 defencemen & 3 forwards. They are permitted in all areas of the icewith the exception of the goalie – They must remain within their defensive zone.

LINE CHANGES

Teams are able to change players at any time during the game. This can be during a stoppage in play or during gameplay. A departing platyer must be within 5 feet of their bench when a change is being made, but must not be involved in the play.

OFFSIDE

Offside is when any attacking player crosses over the blue line into the ‘Attacking Zone’ before the puck. 

PENALTIES

If any rules of the game are broken during gameplay, the referee may call a penalty. If a penalty is called against a team, the offending player will sit out for a specific amount of time. Penalties are Minor (2 minutes), Major (5 minutes) & Misconduct (10 minutes, game or match). The referee will indicate the penalty using hand signals. The most frequently called signals can be found below. 

In Hockey, penalties can be called for a variety of offences.
Below are some examples of some frequently called penalties and the signal the referee will use to indicate the call.

HIGH STICKS

Any contact made with the stick on an opponent above the shoulders.

CROSS CHECKING

Holding stick with both hands and forcefully using it to check an opponent.

HOLDING

Using the arms to restrain an opponent.

ROUGHING

Aiming a punch towards an opponent or a minor scuffle that does not warrant a major penalty.

TRIPPING

Using stick or part of the body to cause an opponent to trip or fall.

SLASHING

A hard chop using the stick on an opponents arm stick or hand with no intention to play puck.

ELBOWING

Using an extended elbow to check an opponent.

MISCONDUCT

Ten-Minute penalty usually given for excessive poor sportsmanship.

HOOKING

Using the stick to restrain an opponent.
